I passed my driver’s license test!!!! I took it today at 2:20 pm over at the West Covina DMV. I had a nice guy as my grader. I only missed 2 points =]. One for slow speeds but he said it was alright since traffic was permitting it. Then the other one was for not looking once at my right hand mirror. Other then that i did awesome!!!
So for a long time now I’ve wanted to try the experiment of adding mentos and diet coke. Today i finally got to try that experiment. At first I had found a 2 liter diet coke bottle sitting in our pantry(a very old one i assume) and i went to the store to buy some supplies. When i came back I had two rolls of regular mentos and one more 2 liter of diet coke(can’t have just one test). Then I went to work on the device that would drop the mentos into the soda all at the same time. My dad had some PVC pipe laying around, a connector, and another connector with a nozle on one side. I drilled a hole about 3 inches from the base so i could put a piece of small dowling in. This would ensure that the all the mentos would drop into the soda at relatively the same time.

However ,any good experiment wouldn’t come without problems to overcome. The connector that connects the soda and the shaft didn’t comfortablely and securely stay on the bottle. To solve this problem I had to use duct tape to hold it down. So now that I had my device already, it was time for me to test out the actual experiment. The first soda I used was the one I found in our pantry.
As you can see by this video, the diet coke did not shoot up as far as I was hoping. My theory is that since the coke had been sitting in our pantry for such a long time the carbonation might have been lost. So with one failure I go back to the drawing board. At the time i thought the nozle might be affecting the experiment, so i took that piece off. Then i also had to deal with the holes on the side where i pulled the dowling out. To fix this problem my dad had to help me in the experiment. This time when i pull the dowling out, my dad quickly puts duct tape over the holes.
This experiment proves to be a great success. However, I am intrigued to do the experiment one more time, but this time put the nozle on. So I run to the store again and buy another 2 litter of diet coke and a roll of mentos. I come back and set up the whole experiment again, but this time with the nozle on top.
The reaction this time was even better. Not only did the diet coke go higher then the second one, the shaft had been blown off too. Possible reason for the shaft being blown off is that when the shaft was picked up two mentos were still inside and another one on the floor next to me. The mentos might have been dropped into the diet coke, but once the reaction started to happen they must have been shot right back up the shaft. Since the nozle is too small for the mentos to fit through, they must have gotten stuck. This would cause pressure to build up and hence the shaft being blown off. Overall this experiment was a total success and it was loads of fun. I wouldn’t mind doing this experiment over again.
